Getting started

Items, prices and barcodes

What an item carries, the two price rules that never bend, and how prices change.

What an item carries

  • Name and unit — pieces, kilograms, litres, packets; a unit can have decimals (1.250 kg) when it needs them.
  • MRP — the printed maximum. A bill never goes above it, whoever is at the counter.
  • Selling rate — what the shop sells at today.
  • GST rate and HSN — the tax worked out on every line, and the code the GST return asks for.
  • Barcode — scanned at the counter; an item can have more than one.
  • Reorder level — below it, the item appears on the Order list by itself.

The two price rules

  1. Never above the MRP. The screen refuses it, and so does the counter app.
  2. Never below cost. Cost is what the shop last paid, read from the shelf's own balance. A rate below it is refused; a rate that is close to it is warned about before Save.

These hold for everybody, the owner included, and no approval overrides them.

Changing prices

  • One item: open it and change the selling rate. The change is in the price log with who made it and when.
  • Many items: ask DukanData to bring in a sheet with the new rates, or use a price list for a group of customers (where the plan has price lists).
  • At the counter, a cashier may cut a price only as far as their discount limit allows; beyond it a manager approves with a PIN, a phone code or a WhatsApp reply.

Opening stock

When the shop starts, the stock on the shelf is written once as opening stock, with its cost. From then on every purchase, bill, return and adjustment moves it.
